For your first blogging assignment, I want you to watch the video 'The Story of Stuff'. Here in North America, we are obsessed with stuff (perhaps your country is the same?). This video is designed to give us a perspective on consumerism and to educate us on where all that 'stuff' comes from, and what happens to all that 'stuff' when we are finished with it.

This is a very good video!!! Very clear and friendly to the viewers. The contrast between the black & white lines with Annie Leonard's image was a great hook. Also, the message is easy to understand and it gives us hope at the end.
ReplyDeletePollution it's a very complex problem but we should work together to find the right solution. The thing is that we have to get involved and start working for our goal: have a clean planet.
Share this link to anyone you know, you could made the difference!!!
Have a great weekend!!!
Actually,I've never seen a clear presentation like this before, and really it's quit interesting. I fount that very useful for us I mean students and people who interest in even the the examples it was clear enough so, after I finished watching the video I realized how the life is going on especially,by material economy in the USA.
ReplyDeleteAccording to the Annie Leonard, about 80% of neutral resources are gone,It's unbelievable. Moreover,we to cooperate to create something new to touch our goals and having a safe life because rest is the best.
Important note:
we should know before we buying stuff we know where it's come and where it's goes.
Good luck all.
This video is very important because It is a serious problem we facing in these days. we have to pay more attention and work together to stop that. Many people think that very difficult to stop that, but it's not, if we buying what we just need we going to solve it. I hope every one start working on it from today.
ReplyDeleteHave a nice weekend...;)
I just watched the video once, and I am not sure whether I can give the correctly main idea, but lots of things came out of my mind.
ReplyDeleteI think the presenter overestimates the consumption. In the development of human, consumption plays an important rule, it pushes everything moves ahead and fast. We cannot blame it. We live, we need stuff. How we get the stuff? Shopping (consumption)!
When the presenter is talking about the toxic chemicals, I think she is worry. What I am going to say--all kinds of chemicals are “toxic”. In the factory, everything must be efficient, it’s impossible to use the natural chemicals, they use the manmade chemicals (actually the 2 kind of materials are same, but the processes that people get them are different). I know some factories make dirty money from the kind people, and I think this is what the presenter means, but she says in a worry way.
People pay more attention on the little GREEN symbol than before, and work so hard. When I was in China, I thought the problem of pollution in China is that people don’t recycle. Once I am in Montreal, I saw the blue sky and the garbage cans with recycling mark, I felt good. One time I went back from a special garbage dump site with the eco-club, I talked what I saw to my friend. He applied me: “Recycling is bullshit, what we need is ‘no wasting’!” Yeah, he was right. Go out at night, you will see the shopping malls and the post offices are still shinny, but no one there! What a wast!
by the way, I like the visual of the presentation, it looks like the Apple style
ReplyDeleteO(∩_∩)O
In fact, I found this video is very intersting and touch the heart of the truth. It explain the problem of pollution by simple way. It describle how businesses design the stuffs which we buy and use to be used in short time. Also, it describe how these stuff affect people, enviroment during production, shopping, and consuming them.It is really suprised me that people ,espcially in North America, get rid of their stuff during six months after the bought them!
ReplyDeleteI hop goverments, businesses, and people consider and take this problem( pollution) in serious way and if they don't, that means the will increase the potential risk of golbal warming more than anyone expect.
This video showed the people's daily stuff is made and sold by a pllouted system. Not only in the factories where discharge much toxin, but also form the biginning to get the materia, people have to destory the natural enviornment, such as cut down the trees, kill the animals. Also, after the goods are used by people, the stuff are thrown to the refuse storage area. In this place, the garbage are burnnde and buried. But, when people burn the garbage, the toxin can be discharged to the air. Sometimes, it can make any super toxin. Toyally, the goverment controll this system with enoough economy energy, but they forget to protect the earth, the environmrnt. If they are still keeping the situation, the earth will run out of the resource, and people have no place to live. It's time to find some ways to deal with the problem. Recycle is not enough, because some goods, like the bottle of the juice, it has different couple of layers, they are very hard to separate. The goverment has to reduce the budget on the system, and use mich money to plant more trees, to care our earth.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, the environmental protection in north america is better than my country -China. Though, recycling is not enough, in China people never know how to recycle the garbage. So in my country, the most improtant this is increase people's environmental awareness. Compare with my city-Guangzhou and Montreal. Here, the streets in more cleanner than Guangzhou, and the sky in more bluer and clearer.
In conclusion, in people's lives, some goods are helpful , but people have to think about what a wasting and destoring in the meantime. Everybody in the earth has to start to do somethings now, start it from a using 1 lessplastic bag, saving water when you are taking a shower!
Pay for Future.
ReplyDeleteThat is what I thought after watched the video.
We do have lots of desires which are able to achieve by consuming stuff. However, the only thing we have to face is weather those stuffs are necessary or indispensable. In fact, we are affected by our environment or the atmosphere which we are living. We hope to catch and keep the trace of the fashion. Definitely, we do not want to somebody who said you suck in our life. That is why we hope and try to buy more and more stuffs.
Consequently, where are the stuffs come from, firstly, they are not exist in the shopping mall at the beginning. All the stuffs are made from several resources, timber, metal, stone, wool, chemical production etc. To make the stuff means to collect the materials. Not all the materials are in the same area, people need to extract from all over the world. Actually, some developed countries prefer import resources from developing countries which were called the third world for example the timber. Furth more, production also exhaust huge of pollution gas like the dioxin. A large numbers of resources are used and huge of toxic gas are exhausted, we may need 3-5 planets to live, but the point is we just have one.
Well, today, we may have not seen such a terrible problem, but we do consume the resources for future. What about our next generation, what should they do after we used out of the resources. Although, recycling is a reasonable option, there are still have lots of objects can not be recycle. Rethink what is you needed and why you want it before you buy something. As it is said, buy green, buy fair, buy local, buy used and most important, and buy less.
well well well, this video shows that we (humans) are forgetting our planet and actually the place we live. In fact Annie Leonard wants to say or convience us to pay attention more and more to keep our world clean. one of the most important point which i got from her presentation is about advertising and how it affects us and our lives.
ReplyDeleteSo, in my opinion, lets ignor advertising and consume less because our world and actually our planet must be clean for everyone to live longer.
We know that more consumption = more pollution = destroying earth = DEATH of HUMANS
Take care
Anyway I think
(the best part was about breasts and children :))) )
This vedio is very intresting and also tell people to protect our environmet. At the beginning ,it tell us that ,in our daily life, we need to consume all the time to catch up with the fishion. However ,we consume more than we need ,we always buy many unnecessary things.By the way ,where all those stuff come from?It made by wooden, mental, silk, timber and so on.Consume more means need more materials. As a result ,more and more source are used up in the world. Some developed countries think that they can import materials from developing countries such as china. So they don't need to worry about the lack of the source. In fact it is a wrong opinion.People should understand that we just have one earth .If a part of the earth is destoryed ,another parts won't have a good life.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion , from this video ,it warns people that we should protect our environment.Over-consume is not only bad for people but also it is a way of weaste source. So encourage people just buy what they need is a best choice. If most people do like this ,i believe that our earth will have a bright future!
It is a good video better than skysrapes video. ^_^ all these pictures draw and play in a funny way. but it takes many serious things to us which we have to think about it. we use too much stuff and throw them away. toxic in and out not only make environment pollution, but also make our life dangerous. OH MY GOD i never think about that my pillow is such a toxic and we make 4,000,000,000 toxic polluting everyears.
ReplyDeletewhat i mostly like part is that the women bought a 4.99 $ radio. we need all stuff which come from lots of countries. the pollution everywhere, and people pay $ for all of stuff
Stop buying crap, cheap products that other people pay for by wasting their own resources or lives.
Recycle and support organisations that keep the enviroment and wildlife.
but be honesty, it is difficult to stop or limite people buying stuff, especially for girls. advertising make people crazy
I think this video is interesting and also educate people about the disavantage of over consumsion. Yes, it is true that nowadays many people like to buy something more than they need and it is hard to stop them because of advertisment and social environment.
ReplyDeleteWow….what a shock….(+___+)||
ReplyDeleteWe all already knew that the resource of the world have been consumed a lots ; however , we may not realize how serious the problems are!
The USA is not only the country which takes the advantages from third countries but also many other developing or developed do so. The statistics of consumed-resources which show on the video are pretty shocking. Image that the only things remain to our next generations are pollution and trash. (Q___Q)
I know it’s hard to restrain from buying things. Many people buy stuffs not for need but desire. However , we are all responsible of the over-consumed problems.
Regard! We have only one plant!^__^

hi Bader i really agree with you and i like when you say we should know before we buying stuff we know where it's come and where it's goes.
ReplyDeletewe have think before buy anything.
Frank you have clear explanation and helpful. i like your comment
good luck both of you. see soon
Hi ,Alejandro. You have a good introduction about the video. Also you show us how is the kind of the video, I almost froget it. Actually, if you can make more imformation on the pollution which is from the system, it will be better. You can add some detail like after people use the stuff, they throw them for the garbage. And after the garbage is burnned, it make to much toxin. If you can write this down, your comment will be get better. Do you agree?
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I made a promises to everybody to show the evolution in different continents.
ReplyDeleteIf someone want to see the pictuer, you can go to the "http://celiblogaaron.blogspot.com/". It's very fun.
Hi, Guo. You give us a new idea, a completely different vision of this video, don’t you? You think in another way which talks about people’s requirement or we call it consumption. That is really fantastic, you know, sometimes when people think in another way, they might get the point. However, when you talked about the presenter who overestimated the consumption, I do not understand why you say like this, do you have some statistics which can prove your word? For toxic chemicals you give us your own idea and that is quite clear. At last, I agree with your idea about some developing countries do not have the awareness of recycling, like China. Folks have responsibility to their living environment.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, you did a great job.
Well, Sonia, looks like the video leaves you a deep impression. From your expression, we know that. En, for your idea, I 100 percent agree with you. You talked about the situation about the world’s consumption. And to protect their environment, some developed countries prefer build manufactories or take the resources from the third world. It is no denying that they have their way to protect their living environment. However, the point is we all live together, it is not like I am in Mars and you are in Venus, we are in different planets and we can do anything we want to do. All of us are living on Earth and we just have one earth. We have to deal with this obstacle by decreasing the desire of stuffs.
Your explanation is really terrific.
Mr. Mond. You have a very good opinion from you head, also your opinion is very important for each countrise which ahve to face to and deal with it. I very agree with you, it not only can help countries to deal with the economy problems , but the improtant one is to deal with the environment problems on the earth. I have to say that's very good opinion. You also made a introdution of the video. From these part, I can see that you have a good ability of the including. You have covered almost each parts from the video. Just a little flaw, if you can make explanations for each part, you can give a more clearer comment, shcu as, you can mention that how the factories affect the air and destroy the resourse.
ReplyDeleteI believe you can do it better and make a almost perfect comment next time. I know you will not let me down!

ReplyDeleteTo Frank:
ReplyDeleteI like your "pay for future". I changed it into "pay for funeral", because things keep going, it's hopeless.
I'm glad that you said we should think about our next generations. If we think about that, people will be more responsible, and behave themselves.
To most of the classmates,
ReplyDeleteWe are asked to give our comments, not to retell the video. Maybe I am a little rude to say this, but I need your critical thinking! After I picked up Frank's idea, I mostly canot find one more.It is the blog-thing, I don't think everything should be very formal, so just say(write) it!
Aaron,
ReplyDeleteMaybe you are right but the really important thing is what i want to comment about the video. I'm allways more interested in how the communication is made and if is friendly enough for multimedia communication because believe it or not, that's not an easy job.
Cheers.
What a great video! Since the video points out that corporations are now more powerful than governments, it could be argued that the true "power of the people" lies in how we spend our money, perhaps even more so than how we cast our votes!
ReplyDeleteGuo,
ReplyDeleteI think i need respond your comment asking for critical thinking. Not everyone thinks the same way. All of us had different ways to reason about questions or themes, and their impact is variable. For example, i pay attention to the technique and the technology used to made the video, maybe for you that's not important but for me it is. That was my reaction after i wached the video.
You have to respect all opinions. If you agree or not that's another thing.
And yes, i think your comment was a little rude but is ok, i know you mean well.
If you want new ideas, i recommend you to start a debate inside the blog asking people about specifics chapters of the video or something like that.
For example, do you think the information on the video is complete or maybe needs more? Do you like how the video was made, with all the cartoons or you feel it should be made in a different way, maybe with more people involved and no just Annie Leonard?
That's critical thinking too. Actually, i bet you didn't think about that, did you?
I don't mean to be rude, i just want to made a point.
Cheers.
Hi Mohammad
ReplyDeleteI read your comments about this video and I totally agree with you that people forget to pay attention about their planet. However, about advertising, I think the governments have to play their roles by legislate laws to ban the advertizing for any kind of businesses especially for those that tempt people to consume more.
take care
Khalid
Hi Ruby,
ReplyDeleteYou are absolutely right that people buy a lot of stuff that aren't necessary for them and sometimes they throw them just during 6 months as the video mention.
so, from now you have to think carefully before buy anything.
By the way, the advertising also a serious problem as you mention, but if you are tempted by advertising or any girl , Just think about the environment and planet. I am sure you will control yourself and consume less
take care
Khalid
Hi Everyone,
ReplyDeleteI have read all of your comments and I am very impressed by the variety of opinions. Yes, this video is really designed to make you think - you all had strong reactions and perspectives that were interesting to read! Some of you also commented on how clearly the information was presented and I was happy to see that too! I am very interested in online learning and for that reason I was very interested in this video too! She was able to explain a very complex process very clearly - which makes it an exceptional educational tool. Finally, it is interesting to see that Guo is not convinced that her message is entirely accurate! In fact, if you google this video, you will find many entries from people who criticize her for exaggerating the situation. So you all make interesting and valuable points.
Don't worry too much about the differences between your posts! Your writing is supposed to be a reaction - we expect 19 different reactions from 19 totally unique individuals ☺
My warmest regard to you Annie Leonard, because u put result of 10 years of research and travailing in a 20min didactic video.
ReplyDeleteThis video is talking specifically about US, but it doesn't mean that this problem is only happening in US. This vid is more like a small picture of a huge phenomenon that running right now in all around the world.
As she mentioned there are some people who think this video and it idea about protecting the planet is "Unrealistic". With my all respect to dear Annie Leonard, i am one of those who think it is unrealistic idea. why ? because nowadays the world has been controlled by developed countries. And in most of developed countries such as US, the government has been controlled by the corporations and producers. so when government has no power it means people have no power. They have to go to any side that corporations choose for them. You think they push them to where? to Shopping more and more. The point is people will never say No, for two main reasons. first, consuming is the primer way that we measure people. So when u are driving Rolls Royce of curse i respect you and let u pass. The Second reason, they have no other options.
In my political point of view, this video obviously shows why Nowadays USA with the name of freedom or fighting with terrorism or any other stupid reasons trying to go to third world countries and stay there. You think they send more than 1 million soldiers and spend billions of dollars each year in different parts of Mideast, Africa and Central America to fight for human being ? Absolutely no my friend, they send them there to owe natural sources and use their human potentials to reach their own goals. Because they kno better than anybody their natural sources going to finish very soon. so they wanna have some replacement sources.
My comment to this video:
" We are digging our graves by our own hands "
Badar
ReplyDeletebro i agree with u about the presentation and also your las sentence is very nice; we should know... it will be a gooood advise for people all around the world but if they ( or we ) listen.
Rubi
ReplyDeletemy dear sister, we have same opinions about the video. So i will agree with u 100% :))))
take care
To Alejandro and Mond:
ReplyDeleteI agree that the video is funny clear
and important !!
The video clearly explain the info to us.
It conveys the serious problems in the
humorous Way.
We should share the info to all the people we know!
well in the part that everybody agree with everybody it's kind of hard to respond.
ReplyDeleteTo Dear Mohammad:
the only thing that i wanna say is, because u liked the breast feeding part,I wish u keep liking it until u get married and use this for ur little cute baby. " just make sure breast feeding not contains toxic chemicals "
To dear Khalid:
Your hope is not enough bro. Because i remember my grandma she hoped to see me as a Doctor. But u see the result ...
So we have to Push people to feel responsible about the future of environment !! how ? by recycling, Reusing, Using as we need etc.
Wow, watching the video and reading our classmate’s comment make me so excited. Of course, with 1 problem we have many sides to see and talk about. According to my thinking, this idea is not new but it really impresses me so much. Not only this is the first documentary video that makes me interesting to watch without forcing but also it make me think more about our earth. I may ask Mahmoud and Guo allow me to join to Echo Club so that I can do a little bit for our environment :).
ReplyDeleteI dont know what happened with the comment between Guo and Alejandro but I strongly agree with Alejandro that every comment must be respected. Take it easy and make our blog increase our communication better.
ReplyDeleteHave a good day for everybody.
Mahmoud, regard back from Annie Leonard to you. I'm big fan of your comments with all my recpect for the others. Your view point about politcal has many facts things, and i agree with you.
ReplyDeletegood luck bro
To Dear Pham:
